The Medical University of Vienna (MedUni Vienna) is one of the most traditional medical training and research facilities in Europe. It is today the largest medical training institute in the German-speaking area with about 8,000 students. With its 30 university hospital departments, two clinical institutes, 12 theoretical medical centres and numerous highly specialised laboratories, it is included among the most important cutting-edge research institutes of Europe in the area of biomedicine. It was founded in 1365 as a Medical Faculty of the University of Vienna and has operated as an independent institution in the scope of autonomous university and self-administration since 2004.

The history of the Center For Public Health (CPH) dates back to 1870 when the Learning Department of Hygiene was founded. The current CPH was established in 2004 and consists of six departments with over 60 full-time equivalent staff members. Besides teaching public health as part of the undergraduate medical training curriculum including the Clinical Practice Year at the MedUni Vienna, the CPH runs two master programmes in German and a Doctoral Programme in Public Health in English. It provides wide-ranging research supervision opportunities alongside a rich, multidisciplinary research programme. The CPH has also been the single approved training centre for public health medical specialist training in Austria since 2015 and is actively involved in different national and international expert advisory roles.
