I am medical doctor with speciality diplomas in paediatrics (1982), medical genetics (1985) and in public health (1994). In June 1981 I defended my doctoral thesis on the topic of risk factors in the development of cancers in humans (Ph.D.) and in February 1987 I was appointed associate professor in this field.

I have over 3 decades experience in public health at global, regional and national levels. I am former head of the School of Public Health at the Institute for Postgraduate Medical Education (Prague, Czech Republic), former WHO Technical/Medical Officer working in the area of health systems strengthening, including health workforce development (1999-2009) and former ECDC senior advisor and expert (2009-2014). I am EUPHA Past-President since Dec 1999 and long-term ASPHER co-worker (since 1994).

In January 2023, I joined the Faculty of Health Sciences, PalackĂ˝ University Olomouc, one of the ASPHER members, as its Professor Associate, to support the public health capacities development at both graduate and postgraduate levels, in particular the new doctoral programme in Health Promotion. On 15 February 2023, I was appointed by Dr Hans Kluge Jr., WHO Regional Director for Europe, to serve for next two years as a member of the new WHO/EURO Technical Advisory Group on Risk Communication, Community Engagement and Infodemic Management (TAG RCCE-IM).
